What is the common entrance examination?   back to FAQs

The Common Entrance Examination has traditionally formed the basis of entry to Independent Senior Schools although many schools now set their own entrance examinations.

The Common Entrance papers are set by the Independent Schools Examinations Board which is made up of members of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC), the Girls’ School Association (GSA) and the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools (IAPS). The papers are marked by the individual schools who have their own marking schemes and set their own entry standards. Common Entrance is not an examination which candidates pass by reaching a National Standard.

The 11+ Common Entrance Examination is usually taken in January, by pupils in Year 6, for entry into the Senior School the following September. There will be papers in English, Mathematics and Science and the content will be suitable for all pupils whether they attend independent preparatory schools or state schools.

The 13+ Common Entrance Examination can be taken in January or June by pupils in Year 8, for entry into the Senior School the following September. There will be compulsory papers in English, Mathematics and Science as well as optional papers in French, History, Geography, Religious Studies, German, Spanish, Latin and Greek. English as an Additional Language is optional at 11+ and 13+.
