  Bedales Schools
Bedales was founded to be different. Where other schools impose conformity, we nurture individuality, initiative and enquiring minds. There is no uniform, everyone is on first-name terms and our students must learn to organize their own time and methods of study, but there are rules, a timetable and a curriculum. Bedales students characteristically develop a mind of their own, become their own person – and are happy with who they are – so they go into the world with confidence.
Category: Nursery School, Pre-Preparatory, Preparatory, Senior, Sixth Form
Co-educational
Day school, Boarding school
Pupils: 3-18 years
Facilities: The Nursery, 'Little Acorns', is located in a beautiful converted barn with space for multi-purpose areas, role play and creative activities. It has a separate garden, a year-round play area and an orchard, its own wooden play equipment and a newly installed Sound Garden and sandpit. The children have access to all the facilities at Bedales. The Pre-prep, Dunnanie, has a fantastic library, a 20-place IT room and shares its playground with the nursery. Dunhurst, the Prep, has specialist teaching in Maths, Science, Creative Studies, Physical Education, Drama, French, Dance and ICT and shares the facilities of the Senior School. The buildings at Bedales represent a range of architecture from an 18th century barn, the Arts & Crafts Memorial Library, the oak-framed 340 seat Olivier Theatre and the 21st-Century Orchard Building. There is a Drama Studio, Art Room and Design Technology workshop. ICT is taught using the school's networked computer facilities and wireless laptops. Creative Arts play an important role with the stream of professional and school events open to the public: music, drama, dance, jazz and lectures in the Bedales Olivier Theatre, and exhibitions of art and design in the Bedales Gallery. Our sports facilities are excellent with a full-sized, floodlit Astro-turf / tennis courts, Sports-hall with space for 8 badminton courts, modern indoor swimming pool, 2 gyms, Multi-gym, 3 hard netball/tennis courts and numerous grass pitches on 17 acres of playing fields. The Learning Support Department supports students where necessary. All students have an introduction to Outdoor Work in the PSHE programme. Students might undertake particular projects, such as building barns, making a pond or creating natural sculptures. Others choose to make jam, plant trees, do hedging work or undertake gardening and livestock management tasks. Our activities programme is vast - from fishing, country walks, gardening and chess to judo, jewellery-making, pottery and rugby. The new, unique and more demanding Bedales Assessed Courses have replaced some of the duller GCSEs. Students move on comfortably to university and beyond, because they are already used to organising their own time; studying in depth; and having spirited discussions with their teachers.
